Die artikel handel oor die rol wat mistiek in hierdie 'betoog' speel. Daar bestaan te veel verskillende verskyningsvorme van die mistiek om 'n omvattende definisie daarvan te gee, maar daar word wel op 'n aantal kenmerke van die mistiek gewys wat in seminale studies genoem word. Mistiek word onder andere gekenmerk deur eenwording met die Absolute - 'n ervaring wat nie in woorde weergegee kan word nie. Mistiek, soos trauma, word gekenmerk deur die verbrokkeling van 'n bekende w&#234;reld. Beide verskynsels is oorweldigende ervarings wat nie in konvensionele taal weergegee kan word nie. In <i>Die sneeuslaper</i> word trauma, mistiek en kreatiwiteit met mekaar verbind. Die sentrale verhaalkarakters gaan deur 'n traumatiese proses waarin afskeid geneem word van die bekende alledaagse werklikheid en gesoek word na 'n mistieke werklikheid, suiwerder as die alledaagse. In die betreding van hierdie werklikheid word die kreatiewe persoon bevry van konvensionele denke en taal en soek sy of hy na die 'so-syn van dinge'. Dit is 'n liminale reis wat in drie fases verloop: Dit begin met die vertrek uit die samelewing, wat lei tot transformasie en uiteindelik tot 'n terugkeer met die vrugte van die kreatiewe proses. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>Expressing the indescribable : mystic desire and loss in <i>Die sneeuslaper</i> by Marlene van Niekerk</b><br/>The four stories in <i>Die sneeuslaper</i> by Marlene van Niekerk all contain a 'narrative argument' about the meaning of life and art. The article is about the role of mysticism in the 'argument'. It is impossible to give an exhaustive definition of 'mysticism', but some characteristics mentioned by seminal studies on mysticism are mentioned. At the heart of mysticism, there seems to be a union with the Absolute - an indescribable experience. Mysticism, like trauma, shatters the world in its familiar guise; both phenomena are overwhelming, and they cannot be expressed by conventional language. In <i>Die sneeuslaper</i>, we find a connection between trauma, mysticism and creativity. The main characters go through a traumatic process in which they take leave of their familiar worlds, in search of a mystical reality, more pure than the reality of every day. By entering this 'higher' reality, the creative person is liberated from conventional language and thought and starts to penetrate into the essence of things. Hy erken in onderhoude die invloed van Afrikaanse skrywers soos Breyten Breytenbach, Jan Rabie, John Miles en Etienne Leroux op sy eie werk. Vladislavi&#263; se werk vind opvallend aansluiting by di&#233; van Etienne Leroux. Die po&#235;tikale verwantskap tussen Vladislavi&#263; en Leroux is veral in die volgende gele&#235;: eerstens, dat albei skrywers verrys bo 'n skryfmodus wat kenmerkend van hul tyd was of daaraan voorafgegaan het en, tweedens, dat hulle 'n opvallend gelyksoortige keuse maak, naamlik ten gunste van die verbeelding. Sowel Vladislavi&#263; as Leroux se skrywerskap volg op kritieke historiese keerpunte: onderskeidelik die Tweede W&#234;reldoorlog en die val van apartheid. In albei gevalle is die samelewing se geloof in die bestaande orde en sy funderingsmites ernstig aangetas. In my bydrae vergelyk ek die outeurspo&#235;tika van Vladislavi&#263; en Leroux met spesifieke aandag aan hul skryfkundige besinning oor (historiese) oorgang en verandering. Wat betref eksterne po&#235;tika, gaan ek uitvoerig in op geselekteerde onderhoude met, en essays van, beide. Aangesien dit hier om 'n eerste of inleidende verkenning gaan, beperk ek my sover dit interne po&#235;tika aangaan vernaamlik tot die studie van kortprosa. Daar word gefokus op geselekteerde kortverhale in Vladislavi&#263; se <i>Propaganda by Monuments</i> en Leroux se <i>Tussenspel</i>. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>'Never one thing. Always one thing and another' : an introductory comparison of the poetics of Ivan Vladislavi&#263; and Etienne Leroux</b><br/>As a language student at Wits in the 1970s, Ivan Vladislavi&#263;'s main subjects were English and Afrikaans. His interest in Afrikaans literature has since been expressed in interviews during which he acknowledged the influence of Afrikaans authors such as Breyten Breytenbach, Jan Rabie, John Miles and Etienne Leroux on his own work.Vladislavi&#263;'s writing bears a striking resemblance to the work of Etienne Leroux. Their relatedness in terms of poetics resides in the following: Firstly, both authors have risen above a mode of writing which either dominated the times in which they were writing or directly preceded it, and, secondly, they have made noticeably similar choices - in favour of the imagination. The writing of both Vladislavi&#263; and Leroux follows in the wake of critical historical junctures: the Second World War and the fall of apartheid, respectively. In both cases, society's faith in the established order and its foundational myths foundered. In my contribution, I compare the authorial poetics of Vladislavi&#263; and Leroux in terms of their reflection on (historical) transition and change. As far as external poetics is concerned, I provide an elaborate overview of selected interviews with, and essays by, both authors. Sy roman <i>Terug naar Walden</i>, gepubliseer in 2009, is 'n herbesoek aan die Waldenprojek van die Nederlandse hervormer en skrywer Frederik van Eeden (1860-1932). Van den Broeck gee te kenne dat 'n heroorweging van die sosialistiese ideale wat Van Eeden besiel het om nedersettings in Nederland en die VSA op die been te bring, geregverdig is in die lig van die ekonomiese krisis wat in 2008 deur onbesonne kapitalistiese praktyke veroorsaak is. In <i>Terug naar Walden</i> ontketen Ruler Marsh, die rykste man in die w&#234;reld, 'n globale finansi&#235;le krisis in weerwraak teen die kapitalistiese stelsel wat tot die ondergang van sy ouers gelei het. Marsh keer terug na die Kempen in Vlaandere, sy familie se land van herkoms. In 'n Heideggeriaanse bevestiging van die lokale, soos versinnebeeld deur die veldpad, skakel Van den Broeck sy visie van die gemene (die gedeelde oftewel <i>the common</i>), 'n konsep wat teoretici soos Michael Hardt en Antonio Negri in hul Empire-trilogie vanuit die kommunistiese denke gerehabiliteer het, met 'n utopiese siening dat 'n stewiger band met die land en die mense uit die eie kontrei 'n nuttige vertrekpunt mag wees vir die ontwikkeling van lewensvatbare alternatiewe vir die kapitalisme. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>The utopian challenge to global capitalism by Walter van den Broeck in <i>Terug naar Walden</i></b><br/>The socialist sympathies that inform the writing of Flemish author Walter van den Broeck align him with a well-established tradition of socially engaged writing in Flanders. In his novel <i>Terug naar Walden (Back to Walden)</i>, published in 2009, he revisits the Walden project of the Dutch reformer and writer Frederik van Eeden (1860-1932). Van den Broeck suggests that a reconsideration of the socialist ideals that inspired Van Eeden to establish settlements in the Netherlands and the United States is warranted in the light of the economic crisis triggered by unchecked capitalist practices in 2008. In <i>Terug naar Walden</i> Ruler Marsh, the richest man in the world, unleashes a global financial crisis as a form of retaliation against the capitalist system that ruined his parents. Marsh returns to the Kempen in Flanders where his family originated. Het vertoonde sterke overeenkomst met het 19e-eeuwse Europese cultureel nationalisme. Typerend is de heldencultus rond <i>volksdigter</i> Jan. F.E. Celliers. Kort na de Anglo-Boerenoorlog smeedde de verering van zijn leven en zijn werk de Afrikaners als verbeelde gemeenschap hechter aaneen. Naarmate de behoeften van de Afrikaners als volk veranderden, verschoof echter ook de betekenis die aan Celliers als iconische figuur werd toegeschreven. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>'From the heart of the people and to the heart of the people' Jan F.E. Celliers as the people's poet</b><br/>In this article, Afrikaner nationalism from the first decades of the 20th century is seen against the backdrop of European cultural nationalism. Comparison shows that particular features that have often been considered as unique to Afrikaner nationalism, like hero worship and the investment of nationalist discourse with religious connotations were widespread in 19th century Europe as well. Special attention is paid to the cult around the 'people's poet', Jan F.E. Celliers. Through the veneration for his person and his work, the Afrikaners were drawn closer together as an imagined community. Het kan alleen via een afzonderlijke literatuurgeschiedschrijving van dat randgebied. In de Nederlandse (post)koloniale literatuur zien we dit gedemonstreerd in de Indische, de Antilliaanse en de Surinaamse literatuur, waarvan de auteurs alleen aan de vergetelheid konden ontsnappen dankzij eigen regionale literatuurgeschiedenissen. De Zuid-Afrikaanse Nederlandse literatuur staat in dit opzicht op achterstand en is in de loop van de twintigste eeuw uit het zicht geraakt. Hoewel meer vooronderzoek strikt genomen noodzakelijk zou zijn, is ook voor deze literatuur een eigen, al is het maar beperkte literatuurgeschiedenis uiterst wenselijk. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>The resurrection of South African literature in Dutch? Some remarks on canonisation of minority literatures</b><br/>To gain entry into literary history and into the canon of literature may be quite difficult for a writer in general; for an author from a cultural periphery it is nearly impossible. For him there is only one road to canonisation: by way of a separate literary history of his peripheral area. Dutch (post)colonial literature is a case in point. Writers from the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), the Dutch Antilles and Surinam have been saved from oblivion because histories of their regional literatures have been published. In contrast, South African literature in Dutch (not to be confused with Afrikaans literature) in the course of the twentieth century dropped out of the picture. Daarna word Cloete se omdigting van die teks ondersoek deur dit met die bronteks te vergelyk om aan te toon hoe die digter die <i>Ilias</i>-gegewe toe-eien en verwerk om 'n lewens- en w&#234;reldbeeld te skep wat in lyn met die res van die bundel <i>onversadig</i> en Cloete se digterlike oeuvre as sodanig is. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>A conversation spanning three millenia : a poetic re-invention of Homer's Iliad by T.T. Cloete</b><br/>The aim of this article is to analise the poem 'Achilles se skild' (The shield of Achilles) by T.T. Cloete, from his volume of poetry <i>onversadig (unquenched)</i> (2011). The poem, as narrated by Cloete, will be compared with the original text as we find it in the <i>Iliad</i> of Homer. In the first section of the article the symbolic meaning of the shield which Hephaistos makes, will be explored. De schrijver gaat vooral in op de belang van Schubarts programma van geestelijke vernieuwing en zijn sterk intrigerende visie voor de Europese mens van vandaag. Als tegenwicht voor de metafysische ego&#239;sme van de Europese mens vindt Schubart in Rusland, en vooral bij Dostojevsky, een levende gevoel van verbondenheid met het geheel die Europa weer gezond sal maken. De twintigste eeuw is voor Walter Schubart het strijdperk tussen het promethe&#239;sche tijdperk van het afvallen van God en de beheersing der aarde enerzijds en het johanne&#239;sche tijdperk van het Messiaanse oerbeeld dat handelt vanuit het verlangen naar heling en liefde anderzijds. Ondanks critiek op Schubarts opvattingen over de cultuurgeschiedenis, legt de schrijver de nadruk op het verrassend actuele wijze waarop Schubarts cultuurkritiek de huidige westerse cultuur een spiegel voorhoudt. </LI><LI><b>Abstract:</b> <b>The struggle between two souls in the work of Walter Schubart</b><br/>This essay explores the relevance of the work of Walter Schubart (1897-&#177;1941), a virtually unknown cultural philosopher from Lithuania, for today. The writer focuses on the importance of Schubart's programme of spiritual rebirth and on his intriguing vision for the people of Europe today. To counterbalance the metaphysical egotism of Europe, Schubart finds in Russia, and in Dostoyevsky in particular, a living consciousness of a relation to the whole that could heal Europe. The twentieth century is for Schubart a battlefield between, on the one hand, the promethean period of deserting God focusing on the earth, and on the other hand, the johannean period of the Messianic era that acts out of a desire for charity and healing.
