    <title>Taxonomy of shallow-water Bryozoa from the west coast of South Africa</title>

&lt;LI&gt;&lt;b&gt;Abstract:&lt;/b&gt; Sixty-three species of shallow-water Bryozoa, from 12 localities along the west coast of South Africa, are described and represent three orders (Cyclostomata, Ctenostomata and Cheilostomata), 33 families and 46 genera. Five species are cyclostomes, three are ctenostomes and 55 are cheilostomes. The relative dominance of the Cheilostomata is not surprising considering the relatively low diversity of cyclostomes and ctenostomes in marine habitats. Of the 63 species, 48  are redescribed from current material. Fifteen species (namely &lt;i&gt;Eurystrotos planus, Membranipora rustica, Chaperia septispina, Klugeflustra jonesii, Bicellariella bonsai, Beania minuspina, Micropora latiavicula, Thalamoporella spiravicula, Escharoides custodis, Bitectipora umboavicula, Schizosmittina lizzya, Microporella madiba, Fenestrulina elevora, Celleporina solida&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Rhynchozoon abscondum&lt;/i&gt;) are new to science, of which seven are found in seven genera (&lt;i&gt;Eurystrotos, Klugeflustra, Thalamoporella, Bitectipora, Schizosmittina, Fenestrulina&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Celleporina&lt;/i&gt;) that are newly recorded from South Africa. Thirteen species are recorded from the west coast for the first time, one of which, &lt;i&gt;Hippomonavella formosa&lt;/i&gt;, is a new record for South Africa. Including the species described here, approximately 270 valid species, representing three orders (Cyclostomata, Ctenostomata and Cheilostomata), 74 families, and 130 genera have been recorded from South Africa. An accurate species number is not yet possible from this region as there are still outstanding problems with synonymies.

&lt;LI&gt;&lt;b&gt;Abstract:&lt;/b&gt; This study used an extensive list of nearly one hundred morphometric measurements  in size-corrected multigroup principal component and discriminant functions analyses,  in an attempt to discriminate species within the morphologically conservative catshark genus &lt;i&gt;Haploblepharus&lt;/i&gt; Garman, 1913 (Chondrichthyes; Scyliorhinidae). Species discrimination within the genus was very good (for &lt;i&gt;H. edwardsii&lt;/i&gt;), good (for &lt;i&gt;H. fuscus&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;H. pictus&lt;/i&gt;) to poor (for &lt;i&gt;H. kistnasamyi&lt;/i&gt;), resulting from a combination of the morphological conservation displayed between species, and possible error due to &lt;i&gt;a priori&lt;/i&gt; species misidentification of some specimens, particularly juvenile specimens. This study shows that the shape variation analyses applied here are capable of discriminating species within a morphologically conservative genus, and that the analyses are capable of tolerating potential species misidentifications. This study also supports the  taxonomic hypothesis that there are currently four valid species of &lt;i&gt;Haploblepharus&lt;/i&gt;.

This study shows that the shape variation analyses applied here are capable of discriminating species within a morphologically conservative genus, and that the analyses are capable of doing so with a minimal sample size for multiple species groups. The results support the taxonomic hypothesis that there are  five valid species within the genus &lt;i&gt;Holohalaelurus - H. favus, H. grennian, H. melanostigma, H. punctatus&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;H. regani&lt;/i&gt;, and that &lt;i&gt;H. polystigma&lt;/i&gt; is a junior synonym of &lt;i&gt;H. punctatus&lt;/i&gt;.

Collignon, currently housed in the Centre des Sciences de la Terre, Universit&amp;#233; de Bourgogne, Dijon, and specimens in the private collection of W.E. Grulke, allow us to comment on, or add to, the descriptions of little-known species from that region, as well as to describe several new taxa belonging to the heteromorph ammonite families Nostoceratidae Hyatt, 1894 and Diplomoceratidae Spath, 1926. For comparison, some specimens from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa are included. The following are described: &lt;i&gt;Nostoceras malagasyense&lt;/i&gt; (Collignon, 1971), &lt;i&gt;Nostoceras collignoni&lt;/i&gt; sp. nov., &lt;i&gt;Anaklinoceras&lt;/i&gt; sp. aff. &lt;i&gt;budayi&lt;/i&gt; Foldyna &amp; Vas&amp;#237;cek, 1977, &lt;i&gt;Jouaniceras&lt;/i&gt; sp., &lt;i&gt;Madagascarites andimakensis&lt;/i&gt; Collignon, 1966, &lt;i&gt;Eubostrychoceras indopacificum&lt;/i&gt; Matsumoto, 1967, &lt;i&gt;Amapondella amapondense&lt;/i&gt; (van Hoepen, 1921), &lt;i&gt;Ankinatsytes yabei&lt;/i&gt; Collignon, 1965, &lt;i&gt;Eodidymoceras enigma&lt;/i&gt; sp. nov., &lt;i&gt;Pseudoxybeloceras stoliczkai&lt;/i&gt; sp. nov., &lt;i&gt;Pseudoxybeloceras&lt;/i&gt; sp., &lt;i&gt;Schlueterella compressum&lt;/i&gt; Klinger, 1976, &lt;i&gt;Schlueterella&lt;/i&gt; sp. aff. &lt;i&gt;S. pseudoarmatum&lt;/i&gt; (Schl&amp;#252;ter, 1872), &lt;i&gt;Schlueterella&lt;/i&gt; sp. aff. &lt;i&gt;S. tenuiannulatum&lt;/i&gt; Collignon, 1969. &lt;LI&gt;&lt;b&gt;Abstract:&lt;/b&gt; Recent (2005) excavations at Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have yielded  upper Maastrichtian ammonites either not recorded or poorly known from previous excavations described by Klinger &lt;i&gt;et al&lt;/i&gt;. (2001). These include &lt;i&gt;Kitchinites&lt;/i&gt; sp. nov., &lt;i&gt;Discoscaphites&lt;/i&gt; sp. and a fragment of a giant &lt;i&gt;Diplomoceras cylindraceum&lt;/i&gt; (Defrance, 1816).
