• Abstract: Three genera and thirty-one species of noctuid moths belonging to various subfamilies are described as new as part of the preparations for an annotated checklist of the Lepidoptera of Lesotho. The majority of these are either endemic or largely restricted in their distribution to alpine grasslands at altitudes between 2500 and 3100 m. The following genera are described as new: Malotia gen. n. (Amphipyrinae); Diargyria gen. n. (Cuculliinae) and Paradigma gen. n. (Noctuinae); the new species are Naarda melanommoides, Idia undulilinea (Herminiinae), Chusaris typomelas (Catocalinae ('Ophiderinae')), Malotia hirsuta, Caradrina rudebecki, C. dukei, Athetis hexencauma, Acrapex lepta, A. leptepilepta, Sesamia mediostriga, S. ammopoecilma, S. punctipennis, S. funebris (Amphipyrinae); Grammoscelis aganniphus, G. brincki, Rhodochlaena hadenaeformis, R. albidior, Diargyria argyrogramma, D. argyrostolmus (Cuculliinae); Mythimna corax, M. semicorax, M. mamohau, Tycomarptes superior (Hadeninae); Agrotis plumiger, A. alticaffer, Ochropleura distriata, O. reductistriga, O. creatochroa, Psectraxylia bisagittatum, Paradigma mamalapi, and P. pectinicorne (Noctuinae). The genus Psectraxylia Fletcher, 1961, is recorded from southern Africa for the first time. The following new combination is proposed: Paradigma aeramen (F. & R., 1874) comb. n. Although largely endemic, this high-altitude grassland fauna has clear affinities with both the lepidopteran fauna of the fynbos biome and of adjacent montane grassland types.
